Desktop Setup
Overview
Section titled “Overview”Aori on Desktop runs as a standalone application. In Desktop mode, Aori can operate as either a Chat assistant (responds when you message it) or an Agent (runs routines, sends briefings, monitors your calendar). Desktop is the recommended platform if you want to use Ollama for local models or run 24/7 routines.
Installation
Section titled “Installation”1. Download the Apple Silicon `.dmg` for M-series Macs, or the Intel `.dmg` for older Macs, from the [download page](/download).2. Open the `.dmg` and drag Aori to **Applications**.3. If macOS blocks the app on first launch, verify the release page, then allow the app in **System Settings -> Privacy & Security**.4. Section titled “Windows”1. Download `Aori-Setup.exe` from the [download page](/download).2. Run the installer.3. If SmartScreen appears for a new release, verify the download from the release page before continuing.4. Aori installs and launches the onboarding flow.1. Download the `.deb` package for Debian/Ubuntu-based distributions, or the AppImage for a portable build.2. For `.deb`, install it with your package manager.3. For AppImage, make it executable: `chmod +x Aori-*.AppImage`4. Run it: `./Aori-*.AppImage` (or double-click if your file manager supports AppImage).Initial Setup
Section titled “Initial Setup”After installation, follow these steps to get Aori running:
- Add your AI provider: Go to Settings -> AI Models.
- Optional Search: Add a Brave Search API key if you want web search.
- Optional Channels: Connect Telegram or WhatsApp in Settings -> Channels.
- Onboarding: Go through the onboarding conversation — Aori will ask about your preferences and how you want to use it.
- Set up Routines: If you want proactive briefings, go to the Routines tab.
Mode Selection
Section titled “Mode Selection”Aori on Desktop has two primary ways of interacting with you:
- Chat Mode: Aori responds when you message it. Great for on-demand assistance and focused tasks.
- Agent Mode: Aori can initiate actions — send you briefings, fire routines, and monitor integrations. This requires at least one channel (Telegram or WhatsApp) or desktop notifications to be enabled.
